Major Recommendations Of Secondary Education Commisioner (1954)

The report was submitted in 1954 by the Secondary Education Commission of 1952-53, generally referred to as the Mudaliar Commission (named after Dr. A. Lakshmanaswamy Mudaliar). It was established by the Indian government to assess the current secondary education system and offer suggestions for enhancements.

The Secondary Education Commission's principal recommendations from 1954:

1. Educational Structure:  introduced the system of 10+2:  Ten years of elementary and lower secondary general education  Two years of intermediate or higher secondary school come next.

2. Course Diversification:  suggested multipurpose schools to accommodate a range of skills and aptitudes.  a focus on both general education and vocational education.

3. Reforms to the Curriculum:  A well-rounded curriculum that includes:  Languages  Math and Science  Humanities  Experience in the Arts and Work  The significance of character development, moral education, and physical education.

4. Enhancement of Instructional Criteria:  improved credentials and training for instructors in secondary schools.  recommended training institutions for teachers' professional development.

5. Reforms to Exams:  suggested internal evaluation in addition to final examinations.  emphasis on lowering rote learning and exam anxiety.

6. Counseling & Guidance:  establishment of career counseling and advisory programs in educational institutions.

7. Reforms in Administration:  For consistent standards, a Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) was established.  bolstering the inspection system to guarantee quality.

8. Regional Languages Are Important:  The mother tongue or regional language should be used as the medium of instruction.  Teaching English as a second language is a good idea.
